The Moment When You Realize the Truth About Joshua…

An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle

“I don’t fucking care!” the large Pyte anxiously pacing the deserted hotel parking lot snarled into his phone as Joshua watched him for another minute before he stepped back from the window and allowed the heavy curtain to fall back in place.

Dismissing the angry male, he turned his attention to the small woman curled up on the bed, nearly comatose as her body struggled to kill off the cancer that had followed her into immortality. Tilting his head to the side, he moved closer and sat down on the edge of the double bed, studying the small woman that seemed doomed to suffer for an eternity.

Closing his eyes, he slowly scented the air around her, taking in the scent of her mate’s blood, the cold blood from another Pyte male that they carried with them and shook his head. The mixture of blood was only prolonging the inevitable. Sooner or later that cancer would spread through her body and finish her.

She’d be alive, yes, but just barely. He couldn’t imagine living on the brink of death for eternity, never being allowed a reprieve from the pain and sickness. It was beyond cruel and as he opened his eyes to watch her, he couldn’t help but wonder if her mate realized exactly what he’d done to her.

Probably.

It would explain the scent of terror that poured off him as he tried to talk some sense into the Council, but it was pointless. They couldn’t help him, something that he should have already realized. Sighing, because they were making things more difficult than they needed to be, he allowed his fangs to slide down.

He raised his wrist to his mouth and gently nipped the skin, just enough to break the skin and allow a small sample of his blood to surface. With that done, he helped her sit up and pressed his wrist against her lips, hoping the scent would rouse her. When she opened her mouth, he pressed his wrist more firmly against her mouth and watched as a drop of his blood rolled down his wrist and onto her tongue. When she recoiled from the taste he released her and stepped back as his suspicions were confirmed.

He watched her for another few minutes as he forced himself to accept what he’d known all along. At the sound of her mate returning to the hotel, he sent the woman that was no good to him now one final look and left, deciding that there was only one thing left to do.

Embrace the monster within…
